Description

Justin Marler’s first Austin experience was performing with his band at the famed venue Emo’s. Since then, Marler has lived and worked in the city, and now he offers his insider perspective to travelers interested in exploring The Live Music Capital of the World. Marler includes details on the best local musicians and venues, the city's famous independent music festival South By Southwest, outdoor recreation options ranging from rock climbing to disc golf, and historic sights in nearby San Antonio. He also provides unique insight into Austin’s cuisine, dividing the “Food” section into subsets like “American and Diners,” “Tex-Mex and Southwestern,” and “Healthy and Vegetarian.” With Marler at the wheel, Moon Austin, San Antonio and the Hill Country gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.

Summary: "Good overview, but poorly organized"

I bought this book for a trip to Austin. It provides a good description of most of the things you might want to do in Austin, as well as some useful maps, but it is organized poorly, which may not be the fault of the author.

Also, the food recommendations aren't always the greatest. We did better using online review sites like Yelp. A useful book, but supplement it with online sources.

Two updates to the book (3/2010): the 'Dillo, Austin's downtown public transportation, no longer runs (sad face emoticon). There's still the bus, though. Also, the Governor's mansion is currently under renovation, so you can't go there.

Summary: "I LOVED THIS GUIDE!!!!"

Finally, for the first time, in a very long time, have I seen San Antonio and the Hill Country get the credit it's due! So many folks that live near San Antonio have never given it the chance and respect it deserves. I was so happy to see many of the great places to shop and eat at that make San Antonio so unique.

Additionally, there was so much about the Hill Country in general that I learned. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and colleagues who are new to Texas in general. What I appreciated most about the book was that I learned of new and exciting places to see in this very big state!
